On Friday, 15 January 2021, the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, attended the signing of the contract regarding the concession of leasing for the accommodation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) trainees, in an area owned by the National Defence Fund.
The contract was signed between the National Defence Fund Director, Lieutenant General Antonios Kondylis and the UAE Defence Attaché to Greece, Brigadier General Jassim Shurafa (Jassim Abdulla Adbul Latif Jassim
Shurafa), in the presence of the Chief/HNDGS, General Konstantinos Floros and the UAE Ambassador to Athens, Mr. Sulaiman Hamid Almazroui.
The contract provides for the concession of 88,349 square metres land of “Mellidi” Camp, in Avlona, Attica, for a specific amount of money and a ten year period, so that modern facilities can be constructed for the accommodation and service of the UAE trainees in the Hellenic Aerospace Industry.
The facilities to be constructed will be in accordance with the current national Legislation and after the lapse of the 10 year charge (or the time extension that is mutually agreed upon) they will be owned by the National Defence Fund.
It is noted that the signing of the Contract with a foreign state has been effected by the National Defence Fund for the first time, following a relevant initiative of the Ministry of National Defence, for the amendment of the current legal framework.
