The Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos awarded Vice Admiral Eleftherios Chandrinos the Commendation Medal Star of Merit and Honour posthumously. The award ceremony was attended by the leadership of the Armed Forces and by Vice Admiral Eleftherios Chandrinos’ family. The Commendation Medal Star of Merit and Honour was delivered to Eleftherios Chandrinos’ wife, Amalia Chandrinos.

The decision of the Minister of National Defence was the following:

“Following a proposal by the Minister of National Defence Mr. Panos Kammenos to the Council of Chiefs of General Staffs and the Council’s unanimous decision, deceased Vice Admiral Eleftherios Chandrinos is awarded the Commendation Medal Star of Merit and Honour for the distinguished services that he offered the Armed Forces and the Fatherland.

Specifically, on July 20 1974, when the Turkish invasion to Cyprus began, as commander of LS “LESVOS”, he managed to disembark personnel of the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (450 privates) on Pafos, whom he had previously embarked on Famagusta for repatriation, after violent bombardment by the nearby Turkish cell, thus causing a confusion among the Turkish forces.

LS “LESVOS” continued its course and returned to Greece, accomplishing its difficult mission successfully.”
