On Friday, 25 November 2022, the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, as President of the Administrative Committee of the National Defence Fund, in the presence of the Fund’s Director, Lieutenant General Antonios Kondylis, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and Understanding with the Mayor of Katerini, Mr. Konstantinos Koukodimos, within the framework of a broader strategic cooperation aiming, on one hand, at the development of areas within the Municipality and, on the other hand, at the best possible use of the National Defence Fund’s property.
This cooperation is taking place in order to:
a. Serve reasons of general interest, based on the strategic planning of the two parties, and specifically the need to upgrade the broader area of Katerini, the social development and improvement of the quality of life of locals, as well as the improvement of environmental infrastructure, considering also the financial and other benefits for the Municipality of Katerini and the National Defence Fund as strategic partners.
b. Achieve synergy between two important State institutions (Armed Forces – Local Government) concerning the development of National Defence Fund-owned property within the Municipality of Katerini, specifically the decommissioned Camps “GEORGAKI OLYMPIOU” and “KOULOUMVAKI”, with an area of 118,817 m3 and 90,277 m3, respectively.
The Municipality of Katerini will complete, within a reasonable time period set at three (3) years after the signing of this Memorandum of Cooperation and Understanding, the preparation of an urban development plan as a single urban development unit for the land of the two decommissioned Camps in accordance with applicable law and in constant cooperation with the National Defence Fund in order to achieve the best possible use of the properties to the benefit of both parties.
