On Friday, 22 March 2024, the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, met at the Ministry of National Defence with the EU Special Representative for the Gulf region, Luigi Di Maio.
During the meeting, they discussed the developments in the broader Gulf and Eastern Mediterranean regions, while the Greek Minister briefed the EU Special Representative on Operation “Aspides”.
Mr. Dendias made the following statement regarding the meeting:
“It is a great pleasure to welcome my friend – if he may allow me to call him my friend – Luigi Di Maio, EU Special Representative for the Gulf region, here at the Ministry of National Defence.
The purpose of his visit was to be briefed on Operation “ASPIDES”, an operation in a crucial area with great importance for the European Union.
This operation secures the sea lines of communication to the ports of the European Union, mainly the Greek and Italian ports.
I should also mention that I will never forget that it was Luigi Di Maio with whom we signed the first agreement in the history of our country on exclusive economic zones, setting a great example of how two civilized countries that understand International Law and the Law of the Sea solve their disputes amicably.
So, I would like to give him a warm welcome to the Ministry of National Defence today”.
