Under Article 102 of the Constitution and relevant law, responsibility for public cleanliness lies with the Local Authorities, and specifically for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier this falls under the Municipality of Athens.
Following comments by the Mayor of Athens claiming that “responsibility for the site rests solely with the Government”, the Ministry of National Defence cannot allow the downgrading of a space dedicated to honouring those who fought for the Nation and the Country.
In this view, the Ministry will commission a third party to handle cleaning and maintenance for as long as necessary.
The Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, has reiterated that respect for the fallen of National Struggles and for history is a collective duty and responsibility of all.
