In the framework of the implementation of the New Force Structure of the “Agenda 2030” reform, three new Special Operations Units are formed in Attica, Central Macedonia, and Northern Evros, by means of Ministerial Decisions signed by the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias. Two out of three Units will be staffed entirely by reservists.

The formation of the new Special Operations Units actively tackles a weakness of the past concerning Special Forces reservists, who despite being trained in the most demanding combat skills, still receive, to a great degree, “white” discharge papers and remain on standby, awaiting unit assignment. Being on standby was neither to their, nor to the Country’s benefit, as the reserve is a pillar of operational readiness.

The goal is clear: each Special Forces reservist will receive priority call-up and know beforehand the Unit they are assigned to, its mission, and the duties they will undertake.

It is pointed out that, in the framework of the new mindset of the Ministry of National Defence regarding the reserve, Refresher Training Centres have been created in Avlonas, Attica, and Litochoro, Pieria. As the Minister of National Defence N. Dendias stated “reservists are the connecting link between the Armed Forces and Greek society. They embody the ultimate, timeless ideal of the Army of Citizens, which has remained the Greek approach for National Defence for more than 2,500 years”.
