On 8/9/2026 the Implementing Arrangement for the acquisition of FREMM Frigates to be signed by the Hellenic Navy in Rome

August 26, 2026

The Implementing Arrangement between the Hellenic Republic and the Italian Republic, which activates the acquisition programme for two Italian FREMM frigates (Bergamini class), will be signed on Tuesday 8 September 2026 in Rome, in the presence of the Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias, his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto, and the Chiefs of both countries’ Navies.

The Implementing Arrangement will be signed by the General Directorate of Defence Investments and Armaments (GDDIA) of the Ministry of National Defence and the respective Italian Investments Directorate, to implement the Memorandum of Cooperation and the Declaration of Intent for the acquisition of the Italian FREMM Frigates, signed on 29 September 2025 in La Spezia-Italy, at the meeting Mr. Dendias had with Mr. Crosetto.

With the Implementing Arrangement, the legal, financial and technical terms for the acquisition of the first two FREMM frigates (Bergamini class) are finalised.

It shall in particular determine:

• The value of the two vessels in the existing situation, and the timetable for the transfer and accession of the vessels in the Hellenic Navy (Carlo BERGAMINI (F-590): Acquisition/transfer within the first semester of 2028 – Virginio FASAN (F-591): Acquisition/transfer within the first semester of 2029).

• The initial and follow-on support to safeguard the operational availability of the units.

• The domestic industrial participation, with the involvement of Greek shipyards in the maintenance works, and the adjustment of new systems on the vessels.

The acquisition of two FREMM frigates, with the possibility to further acquire vessels in the future, along with the four FDI frigates and the modernization of MEKO frigates, shapes a Navy with high potential Strike Units, which safeguard our country’s sovereignty and sovereign rights in the Aegean Sea, as well as in the Eastern Mediterranean.
