The Ministry of National Defence and the Region of Attica will host an open 14 km race on Sunday, 15 October 2017 under the title “MEMORY AND HONOUR RACE: BLOCK 15 (HAIDARI CAMP) – KESARIANI SHOOTING RANGE”.
This race is part of the activities and events under the title “ATHENS LIBERATED” on the occasion of 12 October, when Athens was liberated from Nazi occupation troops in 1944.
The race will start at 08:30 in front of BLOCK 15, the building holding those awaiting execution, in Haidari Camp “KARAISKAKI A” and will finish in the execution area in the Kesariani Shooting Range (National Resistance Museum), following the route usually chosen by German trucks transporting resistance fighters to be executed.
The race will be 14 km. Runners will start from Haidari Camp and will run the following route: Floutzi Str., Agoniston Stratopedou Haidariou – Iera Odos – Pireos – Ermou – Asomaton – Apostolou Pavlou – Dionysiou Areopagitou – Vasilissis Amalias Avenue – Vasilissis Olgas Avenue – Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue – Vasileos Alexandrou Avenue – Grigoriou Theologou – Ethnikis Antistaseos Avenue – Neas Efesou – Pelopos – Shooting Range.
The technical support of the race will be provided by the Secretariat of the Supreme Armed Forces Sports Council, in co-operation with the Region of Attica. The runners will bear messages thrown by those sentenced to death from the German trucks printed on their jerseys with their numbers.
The race Secretariat will be situated at the start area, where runners will pick up their numbers. A bus will be available at the Camp gate to transport runners to the start area (Parking close to BLOCK 15).
Both the opening ceremony in Haidari Camp, as well as the award ceremony in the Kesariani Shooting Range, will be open to the public.
