Following an order by the Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikos Dendias, the Armed Forces participated in the rescue operation conducted in the sea area at the South-east of Crete, by making available the following assets:
– The frigate HYDRA of the Hellenic Navy in the afternoon of November 25th to November 27th, 2014, at noon. The frigate towed the ungoverned merchant ship “BARIS” up to a point of access to the port of Ierapetra, Crete.
– an AS-332 Super Puma helicopter of the Hellenic Air Forces, from the morning of November 25th till the noon of November 26th, 2014, transferred a diver-rescuer of the Coast Guard on board the merchant ship “BARIS” who was tasked with helping to put the ship under tow by another merchant ship sailing nearby and, on November 26, at noon, it conducted the air evacuation of a pregnant woman from the ship to the Hospital of Herakleion, Crete.
