The Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos participated in the ΝΑΤΟ Ministers of Defence Meeting, which took place in Brussels, with its main issue being the review of the Alliance’s Command structure, which is under development, to adjust to the new security requirements and the enhancement of presence to the southern and eastern borders of the Alliance.
The Turkish Minister of Defence, while accepting that his country received waves of refugees, proposed the cessation of the activity of NATO forces in the Aegean, citing a decrease of refugee flows.
The Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos claimed that refugee flows have not ceased and that the relevant decision was made unanimously and it can be retracted only through the same process.
He stressed the importance of NATO’s presence for the discouragement of criminal human trafficking networks and for responding to the security challenges concerning the whole of Europe.
Other issues discussed were North Korea, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, North Africa and the terrorist threats.
