Press Release for the appointment of family members of decedent Armed Forces personnel

September 6, 2013

Α debt – mostly ethical – owed by the Hellenic State, is being fulfilled after the appointment of 72 family members of Armed Forces personnel who fell in the line of duty for their country, as well as one family member to whom damage has been caused by the Hellenic Public Sector.

Particularly, the Minister of Administrative Reform and e-Governance Kyriakos Mitsotakis signed a decision for the distribution of personnel to the Ministry of National Defence, following a relative proposal by the pertinent Minister of National Defence, Dimitris Avramopoulos, for appointments that were pending to co-pertinent Ministries for several years. The total number of relative requests from families of Armed Forces’ deceased personnel and personnel to who damage has been caused by the Hellenic Public Sector that was satisfied is 72.

In this way, the State fulfils obligations that carry a special ethical weight towards the families of Armed Forces’ personnel who risk their life and physical integrity so as to ensure the country’s national security. Moreover, it fulfils – as it ought to – its obligation towards the families to who damage has been caused by the Hellenic Public Sector.

The requests satisfied by Ministerial Decision, since the requirements are met so that the applicants will be appointed to services of the Ministry of National Defence’s General Staffs, include a relative of the Lieutenant (AF) Giorgos Likoudis who, on October 14 2004, fell with the F-16 fighter jet at Pelion-Magnesia, during a scheduled exercise.

They also include a relative of the Captain (AF) Iosif Anastasakis who, on August 26 2010, fell with the F-16 fighter jet close to Ierapetra-Crete, during a training mission. Moreover, they include a relative of the Sergeant Master Konstantinos Gkiokas who, on July 30 2010, fell with the Apache AH-64 Attack Helicopter at Pachi-Megara.

Furthermore, they include a relative of a deceased civilian, who was killed on May 18 2000, when an F-4 fighter aircraft fell on a house at Antikyra-Boeotia, resulting to the tragic death of the two pilots and two girls.

The Minister of National Defence Dimitris Avramopoulos made the following statement in this matter:

With this arrangement, an ethical obligation towards the families of Armed Forces personnel, who gave their life performing their duty to the Country and society, is being fulfilled”.

The Minister of Administrative Reform and e-Governance Kyriakos Mitsotakis made the following statement:

In the context of limited appointments that will be made at the Public Sector during 2013-2014, the Hellenic State particularly cares for certain fellow citizens. We demonstrate this provision today – fulfilling at the same time the moral obligation – by redeeming the close relatives of men and women in the Hellenic Armed Forces who have lost their life serving the country, ensuring national defence and security against possible foreign plotting. At the same time, we have the same moral obligation towards families to who damage has been made by the Hellenic Public Sector. It is the least we can do for those people who sacrificed their life for the love of their country and the wider social community”.
