Today, at the city of Chania, the bust at the monument of the heroic Captain (AF) Konstantinos Iliakis, who fell in the line of duty during a mission of reconnaissance of Turkish fighter aircraft within Athens FIR on May 23 2006, at Balkoni-Akrotiri, Chania, was replaced.
The Minister of National Defence Mr. Panos Panagiotopoulos had asked of the Chief of the Hellenic Air Force General Staff Lieutenant General (AF) Antonios Tsantirakis to imminently start the procedure for the manufacturing of a new marble bust, so that it would be placed as soon as possible to the monument.
It is reminded that the monument’s bust was stolen on December 2 2012 and was later found by the authorities, having gone through significant damage.
The restoration was also attended by the Deputy Mayor of Chania Mr. Manoussos Lionakis, the brother of the fallen hero Mr. Filippos Iliakis, the Commander of the 115 Battle Wing Colonel (AF) Ioannis Gontikoulis and a large crowd.
