Statement by Defence Minister N. Dendias after the meeting of the Special Standing Committee on Armaments Programmes and Contracts of the Hellenic Parliament

June 27, 2024

The Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, made today, Thursday 27 June 2024, after the meeting of the Special Standing Committee on Armaments Programmes and Contracts of the Hellenic Parliament, the
following statement:

Today, in the context of the meeting of the Special Standing Committee on Armaments Programmes and Contracts of the Hellenic Parliament, I had the opportunity to propose two vital chapters of the “Agenda 2030”.

First of all, the acquisition of 20 type F-35 aircraft, the most advanced aircraft flying at this moment. A critical weapon, that will grant great capability to the Hellenic Air Force. It will ensure the possibility of deterring any threat against our country, wherever it may come from.

And then, the beginning of exploring the prospect of joining the ship building programme of the _Constellation_ frigate, the new age frigate of the US Navy, in Greece, with special specifications. If we shall decide upon its building, it is a frigate that may become a critical weapon for the Hellenic Navy, after the initial stage.

It will be the second big weapon after the ‘_Belharra_’ frigates, that may support the course of the Hellenic Navy in the 21st century.

I would also like to express my deep satisfaction on the level of the discussion, but also on the consent that is being formed on vital issues“.
