On the evening of Tuesday, 05 December 2023, the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, made the following statement concerning his bilateral contacts in Ghana and his participation in the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting:
“Today I was in Accra for the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting.
As you know, our country seeks to play an important role in the United Nations. We are running our three campaigns, the campaign for the Security Council, the campaign for the presidency of the General Assembly, and the campaign for the Human Rights Council.
Furthermore, at the bilateral level, I had the opportunity to meet with my counterpart, the Minister of Defence of Ghana, Mr. Dominic Nitiwul, my old friend, Shirley Botchwey, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, as well as the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean Pierre Lacroix. And as always in such a framework, with my friend, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus, Michalis Giorgallas.
I believe we had results at the bilateral level with Ghana. I had the opportunity to promote the signing of a military training MoU between the two countries. This follows an MoU I had signed with Ghana as Minister of Foreign Affairs during a previous visit.
Ghana is an important country for Greece. It is a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, it has signed the UNCLOS, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and it is also one of the important members of the UNCLOS Group of Friends. Hence, I’d like to say that it is good to enhance our bilateral contacts with this country, which also plays an important role in the pacification efforts in Sub-Saharan Africa”.
