On Tuesday 21 October 2025, the Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias stated the following, as regards the Government’s amendment for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier:
“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a place interwoven with national memory. A memorial offering homage to those who sacrificed their lives for the Country and the Nation. It is a place of unity and union of hearts. It should not be used as a means to express political aspirations. It is a cause by itself.
As the President of the Hellenic Republic rightly said, the ideal way to examine how we want the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to be is to sterilize it from the current political situation, as an everlasting symbol of the National Struggles.
After the tragedy in Tempi, the area in front of the Tomb was connected to the universal request of the society for justice. Besides, the Prime Minister himself, with his presence in the place, expressed his respect to the victims in practice.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier unites all Greeks, now and forever. The Ministry of National Defence and the Armed Forces will not see it as a subject of politics and division of the society. We will proceed to this direction.
Showing respect to the dead of our National Struggles and History is a collective duty and a joint responsibility”.
