Statement by Defence Minister Panos Kammenos after the conclusion of the EU Ministers of Defence Informal Meeting in Sofia

May 5, 2018

‘‘In the EU Ministers of Defence Informal Meeting, we, once again, raised the question of the illegal hostage-taking of two Greek servicemen, an Officer and a Non-Commissioned Officer, in a maximum security prison in Adrianoupolis.

These officers are not only Greek officers, but officers of the European Union as well, guarding European Union’s borders. They are NATO officers and members, who were executing missions of the Alliance and they still do, like all Armed Forces.

The issue of the continuance of the illegal detention of our two members, without facing any charge, is not a bilateral issue. It is an issue that concerns both the European Union and of course NATO. More than 66 days of illegal detention, from a country which wishes to join Europe and it is still a NATO member-state”.
