Statement made by the Minister of National Defence, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, after the end of the Military Parade on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary since the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Cyprus

October 1, 2020

We, the Political and Military leadership of the Greek Ministry of National Defence, are deeply honoured and emotional to participate here today in the events for the 60th anniversary since the declaration of independence of the Republic of Cyprus; a declaration that has been won by the Cypriot people after a long struggle, self-sacrifice and heroism, so that the “Cypriot people would climb the stairs of Freedom”, in the words of hero Evagoras Pallikaridis.

Today, this struggle has become an effort for a fair, sustainable and workable solution to the Cyprus dispute, without disregarding the International and European principles and values, in full sovereignty, complete independence and territorial integrity.

Along our common way, we have to face common challenges and threats, to defend our National Rights and to send a strong message that: “Greece and Cyprus – Cyprus and Greece represent an element of peace, security and stability in the wider region”.

It is my wish that the whole Cypriot Hellenism knows that Greece is standing firmly by its side. That is what Greece is doing at present and will always do with all its power.

Turkey’s provocative and unlawful activities inside the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus – an EU member-state – constitute a flagrant violation of the International Law. Therefore, we are coordinating our actions at a European level to make decisions that defend our national interest.

Moreover, I would like to congratulate for the magnificent parade the combat effective members of the Cypriot National Guard and the Greek Armed Forces that paraded before us a little while ago with high morale, a sense of responsibility for their mission and a bearing. They are worth the struggles of Hellenism and are guarantors of the Island’s security and independence.

With all our heart and soul, with this common belief in the Nation’s ideals, we are celebrating together today in Cyprus, looking forward to the overcoming of the Cypriot people’s struggle which, moreover, constitutes our shared vision.

Best wishes to all.

Best wishes to Cyprus”.
