Statement of the Minister of National Defence Mr Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos regarding the ongoing aggravating rhetoric of Turkey

December 29, 2022

JOURNALIST: Thereafter, today we witnessed Mr Cavusoglu, who launched a new verbal attack, raising the issue of “casus belli” once more. What do you have to say about that?

NIKOLAOS PANAGIOTOPOULOS: This statement regarding the “casus belli” which mentions the capability of Greece to exercise its lawful right, points rather to provocative revisionism instead of the stance of an Ally in the context of the North-Atlantic Alliance. Consequently, it is a fact that will have to confound numerous parties.

JOURNALIST: Minister, what is your comment regarding Ankara’s escalation in extreme rhetoric against our country, through statements of sensationalism regarding the Aegean, Crete and much more?

NIKOLAOS PANAGIOTOPOULOS: As I have said in the past, Greece does not threaten nor does it tolerate threats. The government conducts policy and operates based on the national interests and the rules governing peaceful coexistence among states, meaning International Law.
