Statement to the Media by Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, from Drama

September 29, 2023

The Minister of National Defence, Mr. Nikos Dendias, once the commemoration events on the occasion of the 82 nd anniversary of the Massacre of the people of Drama have been completed, stated the following when asked by a journalist about the “friendly” attack by Turkey:

“First of all, we should speak about this day with the highest respect, since I had the honour of representing the Greek Government at the commemoration events for the victims of the Bulgarian atrocities against the people of Drama in 1941. And I want to say here that it is a very important anniversary, because it was the first or one of the first mass uprisings against the Axis forces on the European continent.

Greece, however, did not remain limited in the preservation of the memory of those who died. It gave purpose to its way into the 21 st century, as an integration process for all neighbouring countries and Bulgaria into the European ideal. An ideal of democracy, human rights and respect. I believe that is how we are commemorating our fallen people in the best possible way. Beyond that, Greece fosters by all means friendship and stability in the wider region. All stances and de-escalating statements are seen positively. However, Greece remains firmly oriented towards the protection of independence, the territorial sovereignty and its
sovereignty rights in the wider region, under the rule of International Law and the Law of the Sea that applies to every country on the planet. And it expects every country in the wider region but also in the world to demonstrate such a stance and attitude.

Thank you very much”.
