The Defence Minister Nikos Dendias addresses the Hellenic Contingent in Cyprus personnel

July 6, 2023

The Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, during his visit to the barracks of the Hellenic Contingent in Cyprus, addressed the personnel as follows:

It is a great pleasure for me to visit Cyprus today, at the barracks of the Hellenic Contingent in Cyprus.

I do understand what it means for one to fulfill their military service here, i.e. at the front line in every respect. I am absolutely certain that you will fulfil your mission in the best possible way, if so requested.

A mission which is not easy at all, especially in a tumultuous period in our wider region and the whole world as well, where the Eastern Mediterranean emerges as the center of developments.

I am sure you are well aware of the fact that our country is seeking peace and stability. However, in order to achieve peace and stability, it must make it clear that it will defend its sovereignty and sovereign rights with absolute determination.

Therefore, allow me to say that your presence here constitutes a strong message of deterrence. Besides, this has been proven by our country’s Armed Forces both over the last years and throughout time.

I am fully aware of the fact that both you, the members of the Hellenic Contingent in Cyprus, and the members of the Armed Forces as a whole, fly the flag of power and pride that leads to security and peace. You also have the honour to serve in the context of a historic force.

I do not think there is a single Greek who is not familiar with what the acronym of the Unit you have the honour to serve with stands for.

I would also like to add that the Hellenic Contingent in Cyprus irrespective of its substantive presence also constitutes an additional obvious symbolism; the non-negotiable support of Greece to the Republic of Cyprus.

I also think that over the last years, which followed the financial crisis, you have had the pleasure and pride of witnessing the continuous reinforcement of our country’s Armed Forces with assets that enhance their capabilities.

I want to congratulate you on your work, to assure you of the obvious fact that the Greek society, the Government, the political and military leadership stand by your side. We will use our best endeavors to ensure that favorable conditions are in place for you to seamlessly continue your highly important work.

Greek people are proud of our Armed Forces. If you bother to read any public opinion survey, you will realise that the Armed Forces in fact outstrip any other institution in our country in terms of societal approval.

I am therefore convinced that you will continue fulfilling your highly important mission for the country, with the same love, zeal, and devotion.

Once again, I deeply thank you for your work”.
