The Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr Giannis Kefalogiannis Attends the Commemoration Events for the 80th Anniversary Since the Execution of 15 Martyrs of the Nation from Saktouria by Nazi Occupation Troops

The Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr Giannis Kefalogiannis attended today, Sunday 15 September 2024, the Commemoration Events for the 80th Anniversary since the execution of 15 Martyrs of the Nation from Saktouria in Agyia – Chania on 16 September 1944, by the Nazi occupation troops, which took place in Saktouria – Rethymno.

Mr Kefalogiannis attended the Holy Liturgy at the Holy Church of Timios Stavros. He then attended the Memorial Service and laid a wreath to the Monument for the Fallen, while a heroes’ roll call followed.

The Deputy Minister of National Defence stated the following:

We are here in Saktouria – Rethymno to pay tribute to the 15 Martyrs of the Nation from Saktouria, who were executed by the Nazi occupation troops 80 years ago. The messages from their sacrifice are everlasting and out duty is to preserve their historic memory alive. Today, drawing inspiration from the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the Homeland, we safeguard the ideals of peace and liberty, we enhance our defence capabilities, materialising a daring framework of reformations and constantly upgrading our Armed Forces, which defend, with self-denial, the rights of the Greek Nation and our territorial integrity on land, at sea and in the air”.
