The Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr Giannis Kefalogiannis signed today, Monday 16 December 2024, the amendment of the Military Regulation for the Organisation and Operation of the National Guard, based on article 95 Paragraph 19 of Law 5018/2023.
The changes included in the amendment of the Military Regulation stipulate, among other provisions, the following:
a. Women can henceforth serve in the National Guard Units, on a voluntary basis. These units are staffed from the reserves who are permanent residents of the said area.
b. The eligible personnel for service in National Guard Units must not have exceeded the sixty-seventh (#67th#) year of age.
c. Up till now, there was no provision for the promotion of the members of the National Guard in peacetime. Henceforth, it is possible to award the honorary distinction of the Lance Corporal to members of the National Guard, as well as their promotion for two (2) more ranks, after the completion of at least five years of service in the National Guard, for every promotion. Moreover, the Officers of the National Guard will be promoted up to the rank of Major.
The Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr Giannis Kefalogiannis stated:
“For the Ministry of National Defence, the National Guard constitutes a force multiplier and the initiatives we are taking for the constant upgrade of the institution constitute a solid proof, providing capabilities which improve all the factors of the Strategy for the National Guard. We express our gratitude to the members of our National Guard for their significant and selfless contribution to the defence of our Homeland’s territorial integrity and rights. They constitute the best possible proof of the magnanimity of the soul of the Greek people and also a component of the combative force of the Army”.
