The Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias Briefs the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament on the Second Phase of the New Structure of the Hellenic Armed Forces within the Framework of the “Agenda 2030”

On Wednesday 3 September 2025, the Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias briefed the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament on the Second Phase of the New Structure of the Hellenic Armed Forces within the framework of the “Agenda 2030”.

The meeting of the Standing Committee was also attended by the Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis, the Chief/HNDGS General Dimitrios Choupis, the Chief/HAGS Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis, the Chief/HNGS Vice Admiral Dimitrios – Eleftherios Kataras HN, the Deputy Chief/HAFGS Lieutenant General (HAF) Ioannis Kotsakis and the General Secretary of the Ministry of National Defence Antonios Oikonomou.

During the briefing, the Chief/HNDGS General Dimitrios Choupis made a detailed presentation of the New Structure, while the Chiefs/HAGS and HNGS, Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis and Vice Admiral Dimitrios – Eleftherios Kataras HN, respectively, answered questions on matters under their responsibility.

After the Minister of National Defence and the Chief/HNDGS answered the relevant questions, the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament approved of the Second Phase of the New Structure of the Hellenic Armed Forces (the New Democracy party voted in favour of the Second Phase and the Political Opposition parties abstained from voting, except for the Communist Party of Greece, which voted against the decision).

The Second Phase of the New Structure of the Hellenic Armed Forces includes:

  • The further merger of Military Camps and Units across the Country,

  • The decommissioning of the Hellenic First Army as an intermediate level of command,

  • The re-organisation of the HNDGS Intelligence Branch,

  • The restructuring of the Supreme Military Commands on the basis of the Theatre of Operations into the Epirus – Macedonia, Thrace, and Aegean – Eastern Mediterranean Supreme Military Commands,

  • The Change of Station and upgrade of the Army Inspectorate General,

  • The establishment of an Unmanned Air Assets Command for the Hellenic Navy and of a Drone Training Centre for the Hellenic Air Force,

  • The establishment of a Naval Management Task Force for Naval Unit programmes.
