On Monday 28 July 2025, the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Thanasis Davakis, at the Plenary Session of the Parliament, where the following Bill was passed: “Utilisation of the Armed Forces’ Real Estate – Formation of a National Defence Real Estate Fund and a Body for the Utilisation of the Armed Forces’ Real Estate – Action Plan for the Management of the Housing Needs of the Personnel of the Armed Forces” made a statement.
During his speech, Mr Davakis focused on the need to support the personnel of the Armed Forces, and the welfare policy carried out by the Government, pointing out the importance of the bill for the utilisation of real estate, and the transfer of funds to the Ministry of National Defence’s housing programme.
Speaking about the personnel’s Housing Programme, he pointed out that it will be implemented in four phases. The first two include the building of 702 houses, which will be ready in 2026, while the following two will add 1,000 houses in frontier and island regions. “We should bear in mind that 41% of the Armed Force’s personnel are renters. We should bear in mind that it is this very situation we are trying to remedy with the housing programme” he pointed out.
A special mention was made of granting real estate to Municipalities, to the benefit of local societies, such as:
Granting Varytis camp for the building of a Children’s Oncological Hospital,
Granting Karatasios camp for the building of the new Thessaloniki Oncological Hospital.
And the cooperation with the Municipality of Eastern Mani for the utilisation of the former camp of Gytheio.
The Deputy Minister repeated the Government’s promise for continuous support of the personnel and their families, stating:
“For the personnel of the Armed Forces are an integral part of the progeny of the Hellenic people. We are addressing them, since we feel they are the nation’s pride and shield, as Konstantinos Karamanlis said a few months after the establishment of the Republic in 1974 – 51 years ago. We are trying to raise the quality of life and career safety of our personnel, in order to attract more of them”.
